Probably the most engaging and interesting way to get readers interested in a blog is to write opinion pieces. The best way to write an opinion or editorial piece is in response to something else that other bloggers or reporters have written. For this post, research an opinion piece or argument pertaining to your blog post…..see what kind of controversies are out there! Read and annotate the article. Then react to it! This reaction piece will become blog post #3. It should include:
- A complete summary of the original article (1 paragraph) that follows the requirements of summary
- A clear expression of your point of view: Do you agree, disagree or both? Make sure your position/claim are clearly stated.
- Engage 2-3 specific issues or ideas suggested in your chosen article. Quote these AND discuss what you think about them. This is your evidence section.
- Then explain your position. What are your reasons for agreeing/disagreeing/both? Be clear, factual, and logical. Explain YOUR solution/opinion. Although it is not required, you may use other research to support you.
- Follow the ten requirements for writing a controversial topic without regrets.
According to an article by Bhagwad Ja Park, titled Expressions, he expresses his feelings that a waiter or waitress should not be tipped. All waiters do is bring tables food and act like they have been friends with everyone their whole lives. Also just because their employer does not pay them enough does not mean customers need to tip them to make up for that. Money doesn’t grow on trees and therefore people shouldn't give out money just because you delivered my hamburger and soda.
ReplyDeleteServing is way more work than just bringing food to the table. Every server works hard for a little amount of money and deserves that little bit of extra money for treating you good. “Just leave me alone ok? I don’t want to bloody chit chat with you. I want food. FOOD! Get it? It’s a restaurant. I go there to eat. I go because I want either Italian food, Chinese Food or something else which I can’t get in a McDonald’s. So I come to a restaurant to fulfill my cravings for it. I will pay for what I value – food. Not you.”Yes of course servers act like they are your best friends, because if they didn’t you would have a horrible experience and most likely would not eat at that restaurant again.
“I expect you to be grateful and pray for me at night if I tip you 10%. Be happy I gave you anything at all. I worked for the money in my wallet and by giving you some I didn’t have to, I’m doing you a favor. Learn to remember that when people give you something they don’t need to, it’s a favor. You don’t complain that they didn’t give you more!” You certainly do not need to leave a server any tip. It isn't like a law or anything. It is just something to do out of generosity for them being on their feet waiting on your every need.
Every server works hard for a little amount of money and deserves that little bit of extra money for treating you good. Serving is mostly doing whatever it takes to make the guest happy and have them keep coming back. No matter how needy a customer is and drives you up a law it’s all about waiting on them. From personal experience I can say serving is a job that takes a lot of hard work and is way harder than most people think.
I had a hard time trying to find your point throughout the article. I did not know much about where your position was. While I was reading, I wanted to know more about your background. Have you ever served food to a customer before? This information was lacking through the post. I also found at the end of the first paragraph you had directed the post towards me for "delivering the hamburger and soda" and made me felt unhappy.
DeleteI would be careful of too much attitude. It might make the reader feel uncomfortable, or unhappy.
I also felt a lot of attitude in your article. I do agree with your point, I think they do work hard but I do not know what side you are on. If you support tipping, or not.
I like how you give your position on that I also think that people should get tips. Make your sentences more fluent and watch grammar.
DeleteI agree with your reaction to this article. I think servers put in a lot of effort that sometimes goes unnoticed. Most of the time, the tips that a server receives equal more than their wage. Also, I think your writing is well structured and I like that you included quotes from the article. Do you enjoy being a server? How does it affect you when a customer decides not to leave a tip?
DeleteI'd like to know more about your personal experience in this post. If you enjoyed it or not, and how it makes you feel if you get a bad tip. Or what you do about it.
DeleteAccording to Cheyanne Dunn who wrote an article on March 20 2015 about “5 Perks of Being a Hostess,”stated that hostessing overall is a tough but accomplishing job. It was also stated that as a hostess you basically control the flow of the whole restaurant, and you need to know what’s going on in the restaurant at all times. Being a hostess also means that you’re the front person for your place of work. You are the first thing customers see when they walk in, which means you are the start of their experience that night.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything that the author has posted in her article. The author stated “You set the mood, which is not only important but can be fun if you are good at talking to strangers about anything.” This idea connects back to the main idea because this explains the idea of the actual job itself and how the job can even be fun if you make it out to be. Also as a hostess you’re going to have to have good communication skills in order to seat the people.
I also agree with this entire article because of my own personal experiences I have as a hostess. The author also stated,“Take time to observe the room and always have a good idea of what’s going on.” This quote connects to the main idea because this is a good tip for anyone who wants to be a successful host or a hostess. I agree with this quote because in my own personal experience, it gets hectic and out of control if you don’t know what’s going on. Also if you know what's going on, it will be less stressful to find an open table where you can sit more people.
“Hostessing can be a challenge at first, but once you get the hang of it, it gives you some power.” Said Cheyanne Dunn in her article. I agree with this idea or statement because as a hostess, you have to learn how the job works. You can’t expect to jump right in and expect for everything to go smoothly. It will take time to learn the basics and to master the skills of being a successful hostess. I also agree with this statement because it is very relatable, because the job will get easier and more enjoyable the more you work at this job. I know this because of my own personal experience of being a hostess.
I want people to understand or get an idea of being a successful hostess. I want people to also grow an understanding that hostessing is not as easy as it may look, and I think that it’s important that people learn about the job more before actually start and jump right into this type of job. Learning more about this job will greatly benefit you if you’re interested in this job, because you’ll find out that it can be less stressful when you first start. Hostessing can be overwhelming, but the perks can be definitely worth it.
Your writing is well structured and your point is clear. How long have you been a hostess? Would you say that being a host/hostess is not for everyone?

ReplyDeleteAccording to the article by Mark Young called Ronaldo is world’s best player, not Messi. Young expresses his opinions on the huge controversy of who the best soccer player in the world with the use of ethos and pathos to connect with and persuade the audience on taking his side. The first main idea in the article is that Ronaldo has exceeded all expectations at Real Madrid with becoming tied as la liga leading scorer. The next point he makes is that Ronaldo has all the tools that are rare to find in a soccer player and that makes him so unique and one of a kind. His final point is that even with a supporting cast nowhere to be found, Ronaldo still won the Pichichi as la liga leading scorer last season.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Messi, not Ronaldo is the world’s best player. Mark Young does not back up his claims with any evidence, Instead, he uses pathos and expects us to believe that Ronaldo is the best player in the world. His blog is very opinionated and unfortunately fails to convince anyone that his view is right.
In the article, Young contradicts himself by saying, “There is always an element of popularity contest in all these mvp and player of the year awards, and that may hurt the man from Madeira.” Young is basically saying that if Ronaldo does not win the best player in Europe award, then it is not because of how good he is, but that he is not popular enough. In fact, Ronaldo is one of the most popular players in the world so this argument is not very valid.
Another claim he makes is that Ronaldo has exceeded expectations, in the article he says, “He came to Madrid in 2009 with an explosion of klieg lights and massive expectations. Incredibly he’s exceeded those expectations.” Young does not back up his claim with any evidence of how he has exceeded those expectations. Since 2009 his team has only won the champions league once.
The final thing he says is. “He’s a five tool player-speed, dangerous in the air, dazzling crossover moves, free kick maestro and goal scorer par excellence.” Again, he does not back up this claim with any sort of evidence such as the amount of goals he has scored or the success rate of his free kicks. Messi is a better dribbler, faster, and a better goal scorer than Ronaldo so this claim is very weak.
I want soccer fans to understand that people can say Ronaldo is the best player in the world, but they have no solid evidence because Messi is better in almost every category. I believe Messi is the world’s best player, not Ronaldo. I want to write about this because I have a passion for soccer and huge Messi fan, who deserves the title.

DeleteI love that you disagree with this article and give examples about why Messi is better. I agree I like Messi more then Ranoldo.
DeleteYou could get a little bit more evidence but overall good.
DeleteYour piece is well constructed and gives me a good idea about how you feel and how the writer of the article feels. You did a great job on elaborating on the main points of the article. I completely understand what your saying in your conclusions and this topic will appeal to a large amount of people because many teens and people in their early twenties hold this type of job. I feel this argument is good for your blog to allow people to get a feel of what they are in for if they begin to work in this job field.
ReplyDeleteThe article, “Dangerous Ride? ATV Deaths Prompt Safety Warnings,” by Linda Carroll of today.com states that ATV’s are dangerous and people especially kids should think twice about riding them. This article talks mostly about how atvs are unsafe for the youth, but also adults. They are calling for more safety regulations and encouraging parents not to allow their kids to ride ATV’s because they are unsafe.
ReplyDeleteI myself agree with most of the safety procedures that need to be taken while riding an atv. But some of the points they make about how the ATV’s are the problem and not the riders. I completely disagree with that.
In the article it explains about how young children are incapable of riding atvs because they are too heavy and the kids are not physically able to keep control of it. A quote from the article says, “Atvs are dangerous to children because they are not developmentally capable of operating these heavy, complex machines.” This statement that is written is arguable because there are atvs that are made for the youth with lower amounts of power and smaller in size as well. It also depends on the persons riding style. If the person riding wants to be a little more aggressive while riding, then they should probably have an atv that is the right size for them with the correct amount of power for their skill level. If the person riding is only going to be riding from point A to point B and doesnt care as much about how fast they get there. Then in that case I think a younger rider will be fine riding that atv. Even if it is not the correct size. Another thing that the author of this article says is. “Some say it is not the vehicles to blame, but the way people use them. There are numerous videos on youtube to showing crazy behavior on atvs.” I disagree with them saying it is the way they ride being the problem. When really the only problem is the rider’s experience. I have plenty of experience and I take risks constantly while riding. Taking corners at very high speeds and doing tricks is something I do on my atv. It isn’t the atvs fault when someone with little to no experience tries riding an atv like a professional and gets hurt.
People need to realise that it is not the machines but it is simply either the lack of experience they have or just being careless and not knowing or following the safety precautions that come along with riding atvs.
I do agree with your statement that it is the riders fault. There are a bunch of safety precautions you can have but its all how the rider whats to respect the machine. I like how you put quotes in from the article and reacted how you felt about them. It really can make people change their mind about this machine. There probably could have been better quotes but the ones you put in do work.
DeleteI think you should paragraph your blog post a little more so it would be more organized.
